Ingrown Toenails

Most of my patients in New Bern, NC, presenting with ingrown toenails attribute their condition to improper nail cutting.  The truth of the matter is that the majority of ingrown toenails are caused by the shape of the nail.  This shape can either be inherited or the result of acute trauma, repetitive trauma (shoe pressure), or a long-standing fungal infection.

Regardless of the cause, a permanent nail correction is the solution to this common condition.  This is a minor procedure performed in the office setting, under local anesthesia.  It involves removing the curled edges of the nail before applying medication to the matrix (root of the nail).  This prevents the nail edge from regrowth.  Daily bandage changes are required for 2-3 weeks until the toe has healed.
